Max Verstappen favorite for victory in Florida as Red Bull tries to turn up the heat

The Miami Grand Prix takes place this weekend for the first time as the new track enters the season proceedings at the Miami International Speedway in Florida.

Charles Leclerc and Ferrari topped the drivers’ and constructors’ standings, but last month’s Imola GP shook that lead slightly.

Red Bull may have clawed back some crucial points in that regard, but Ferrari are still sitting well with Leclerc on a whopping 86 points, 27 ahead of second-placed Max Verstappen.

Sergio Perez is also not far behind team-mate Red Bull with 59 points.

And that’s largely down to last week’s result where Verstappen made great strides in defending his league title, with Perez finishing second.

Leclerc finished sixth for Ferrari by at least eight points on the board – but it was the first race the Italian manufacturer had finished outside the podium.

Carlos Sainz recorded a DNF for the second time in a row, giving Red Bull even more redemption.

Lewis Hamilton didn’t have a great run, he was even overtaken by former rival Verstappen.

But those finishes could be left out this weekend, barring any mistakes on the new course, as the cars receive much-needed updates to adapt to the Miami track.

Ferrari should be able to dominate in the corners while Red Bull will have full power on the two long straights, for what has been seen so far.

But the Italians could be looking to increase their power so as not to waste precious time on the parts of the course where Red Bull will be stronger, and it looks like it will be tighter this weekend than last time.
