Italian online gaming market posts record third month in revenue

In January, the Italian online gaming market broke its overall turnover record for the third consecutive month.

Figures from Agenzia delle dogane e dei Monopoli, processed by Ficom Leisure, show that online casino and slot operators generated 162.85 million euros ($ 193 million) in revenue, up by 6% compared to the previous month and by 99% compared to the same period in 2019..

The overall market GGR stood at 335.9 million euros year-on-year increase of almost 57%, but a slight decrease from the all-time high of 359 million euros set in December. This figure is nevertheless in line with the strong upward momentum generated by operators throughout H2 2020.

With the country still under foreclosure restrictions, online verticals dominated the GGR charts, as expected. Casinos and slot machines contributed 48.47% of turnover, while sports betting weighed in with 42.76%.

January’s online sports betting total of 143.64 million euros was down from 177.1 million euros in December, but represented a 66% increase year-over-year. Since the start of the Serie A football season, the total sports betting for the full month has fallen only twice year-on-year – in November and January – despite the ongoing closure of bookmakers which is a barrier to the entry for many.

PokerStars continued to dominate the casino and slots market with just over 11% market share, while Bet365 moved from sixth to third place in the sports betting market; it garnered 12.2% market share, slightly behind regional operators Snai (12.4%) and Sisal (12.8%).
