AGCO Fines Another Ontario Operator – Casino Reports

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is once again keeping a firm grip on the province’s newest regulated online gaming model. More recently, the regulator fined Unibet for violating advertising and inducement for which the province has strict rules. The operator will now have to pay a fine of CA$48,000.

Ontario’s online gambling and sports betting model launched on April 4, 2022, after years of effort by local governments. The market is operated by AGCO and its subsidiary iGaming Ontario and since launch, the province has registered over 46 operators and 27 digital sportsbooks to operate legally in the jurisdiction.

Violation of provincial protocols

On Thursday, August 25, 2022, AGCO announced that it had fined Unibet CA$48,000 for failing to comply with provincial law. Registrar Standards for Internet Gaming. Thus, the company joins companies like PointsBet Canada, BetMGM and DraftKings, which have been fined by the regulator in recent months.

Unibet’s violation relates to its marketing in May when the company advertisements published and broadcast indicating that it offers generous welcome offers. Currently, the province prohibits operators in the province from advertising bonuses, credits or sign-up incentives. Such promotions can only be marketed on their official website or by directly contacting a customer, but not to the public.

In a press release from the regulator, its chief executive and registrar, Tom Mungham, shared a few words about the fine. Speaking on behalf of the commission, he said it expects all registered operators achieve and maintain high standards responsible gaming, as well as player protection and gaming integrity. He added that the regulator will continue to monitor the market for any violations.

Previous rule breakers

Before Unibet, DraftKings was the last operator to be fined by AGCO. The bookmaker was slapped with a hefty CA$100,000 fine in June 2022, for breaching Registrar’s Standards Standard 2.05 for Internet Gambling. In May, the company reportedly promoted increased ratings for hockey games during the NHL playoffs broadcast on TV and social media.

And as already mentioned, BetMGM and PointsBet Canada have also been financially penalized by Ontario’s iGaming regulator. BetMGM was fined CA$48,000 for failing to meet 2.04 and 2.05 standards. This was after his tweets promoting a “CA$240,000 launch party”, while the second announced a CA$10 casino bet by placing a CA$25 bet first.

PointsBet Canada’s monetary fine was also for violating standard 2.05 of the provincial protocols. His fine was in the order of CA$30,000 for put up posters at GO stations and on GO trains that encouraged free play. Company CEO Scott Vanderwel apologized on behalf of the company for the misunderstanding.
